SDNY COURTHOUSE,
April 19 –
Paula

Lisboa worked
at a beauty
salon on West
57th Street in
Manhattan run
by seven
Brazilian
sisters but
had her work
reduced and
then was
fired. That
was in 2014.
She
sued.

 The

trial began on
April 18 and
19, 2023
before U.S.
District Court
for the
Southern
District of
New York Judge
Vernon S.
Broderick.
Inner City
Press was
there.

On April 19,
Lisboa was on
the witness
stand,
recounting how
in early 2014
the number of
waxes referred
to her was
reduced.

She

complained,
and supervisor
Magaly Santos
told her she
was
fired.

Tips

were taken,
too. Lisboa
looked
directly at
the jurors,
who were
selected the
day before
after being
asked what TV
shows they
watch and what
social media
they use.
There were
roller skaters
and a retired
publisher,
among others.
Now they will
decide what
happened in
2014.

The

case is Lisboa
v. J. Sisters
57, Inc.,
14-cv-8115
(Broderick)
