The makeup artist who worked on Emily In Paris has shared some tips and tricks on how you can re-create your favorite characters’ looks from the Netflix show – and revealed what beauty products she used to keep the stars’ skin looking clear and hydrated all season long.

French makeup artist and groomer Aurélie Payen – who has worked with celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Kendall Jenner, Tom Cruise, Cara Delevingne and Emily Ratajkowski in the past – was enlisted to oversee all the glam on the popular comedy series.

And luckily for us, she recently shared some epic behind-the-scenes secrets with Buzzfeed – and dished on how she curated the looks throughout season three of the show in honor of its recent release.

The series follows an American girl named Emily (played by Lily Collins), who moves to Paris for a job opportunity, but struggles to adapt to the French way of life – and according to Payen, it was important for her to reflect the characters’ evolutions throughout the show with their cosmetics.

For season three, she said she decided to use more ‘French influence’ in Emily’s makeup – since she is ‘more settled in Paris’ now – opting for things like ‘pink cheekbones, lots of mascara’ and lip balm ‘instead of matte lipstick.’

But of course, she said she couldn’t shy away from Emily’s ‘signature’ bold lip colors.

‘For Emily, I wanted a change [for this season],’ she explained. ‘Emily’s bold lips have always been her signature look – I wanted to keep that in mind but I wanted to give her a French cool attitude since she was more settled in Paris [this season].

Payen said season-three Emily was now more mature, no longer a girl but a woman.

Emily also underwent a major transformation with her hair this season – she got super chic bangs – and according to Payen, they turned to French fashion icon Jane Birkin for inspiration when coming up with the new ‘do.

‘Sometimes, as a woman when you have things happening in your life, you want change,’ she dished. ‘For us, it was hair. So Emily has bangs in season three. It was a big change.

When it comes to foundation and concealer, Payen said she doesn’t like to use too much because it’s ‘very important for her as a makeup artist’ to not completely cover up someone’s skin.

‘I start my makeup looks with light foundation and light concealer. I want to show the skin, I want to see the skin,’ she added.

Payen also explained that each character has their own unique look – and that she never likes more than one person in the same scene to have similar styles of makeup.

If one character is wearing a red lip, Payen said she would play up the other’s eye makeup.

When it comes to keeping the stars’ skin in tip-top condition, Payen credited the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask – which costs $380 – with doing the trick.

‘My goal was to keep the actors’ skin the best it can be. On the first day of shooting, their skin was great, and on the last day of shooting their skin was even better,’ she said.

Payen said the mask helped with acne, pigmentation and skin brightening.

She also said she likes to use the $19 Payot Gentle Toning Mist, which she mixes with moisturizer.

The artist advised applying the product to the skin while still wet as it absorbed better.

Payen said the mist was vital in keeping the actors’ skin hydrated during extra hot days on set.

'In one scene, I don't want the characters to all have red lips. So one wears a red lip, whereas, for the other one, we will try to focus on the eyes,' she said. She is pictured on set

She said it was a challenge to keep the actors’ ‘hydrated and cool’ as France had ‘crazy weather’ throughout July and August after filming started in June.

‘We had to be very careful about the sweat [messing with their makeup]. So I loved to use the Payot mist on them [to refresh their skin before touching up their makeup],’ Payen said.

In addition, she told the outlet that eyepatches, lip balm, and ice rollers are important to her.

Payen said she would use the rollers to massage the skin, adding: ‘It brings blood to the skin and helps wake it up.’

‘The makeup has to be the exact same – the exact amount of foundation [has to be applied], the exact amount of lipstick, the positioning of blush on the cheekbones, and everything like that,’ she recalled.

‘Working with Lily has been an everyday pure happiness. I have never seen someone so brilliant and passionate,’ she said.

‘She’s a hard worker, never complains and always smiles from morning to night.’

She explained that when the show first started, she chose ‘light’ and ‘fresh’ makeup for Emily with a ‘touch of color on the lips to give it some character.’ But as the character ‘began to discover Paris’ her style quickly started to change.

‘As Emily began to discover Paris and all the possibilities she had in fulfilling her dreams, the evolution of her makeup and style reflected those changes,’ she explained.

‘She was already very feminine and had a sense of perfection. But naturally, as she spent more time in Paris, she became a bit more sophisticated and her make up was also a bit more intense.’
