Nigel Lewis

Nigel was born in Cardiff in 1948, but with family roots in the Valleys and West Wales. He gained a first-class honours degree in architecture and conservation and ran his own architectural practice in Cardiff for 20 years. In 2005 he won the RICS Best Building in Wales Award for the design of the George Thomas Hospice.

A lifetime of working with many of the best architects, designers and landscape architects in Wales imbued his design work with a passion for sophisticated 20th century Scandinavian design and an abiding love of both vernacular and historic Welsh buildings. All this within the rugged landscape of his beloved Wales

Retirement from practice in 2013 has allowed Nigel to embrace a whole new challenge of oil painting, unlocking the joy of thick impasto paint and working with palette knife.

Through a mixture of actual and imagined landscapes, his latest paintings attempt to portray the poetry and majesty of the fragile and often lost ghosts of a fast-changing land.

Inspired and heavily influenced by the dramatic landscapes of Kyffin Williams, Wilf Roberts and many other Welsh artists, Nigel readily acknowledges this creative inspiration, enabling him to produce work with buildings, landscapes and heavy skies that a whole working life has prepared him for.
