Lara Davies

Born 1985 in Maesteg, Wales, UK, currently living and working in Cardiff.

The materials used in Lara's work are deliberately minimal - a limited palette of oil on unprimed board. Lara's landscapes are painted away from the subject, where the starting point of a painting is a digital image. Lara then makes numerous studies of the same or similar image, where the photographic image is gradually disregarded and the paintings become about pattern and tone. A sense of being many times removed from a place is evident in the final painting, although Lara aims to retain the glowing quality associated with a digital image. This absence but reliance on an anonymous author of the initial image limits the amount of information that Lara translates to the viewer. Her slight yet purposeful gestures allow the viewer to construct their own narrative within Lara’s work.

Lara's latest series of works are painted mainly from photographs taken by a friend in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California. Lara was interested in the unmistakably Californian light, and enjoyed exploring the contrast between Cardiff, Wales and Cardiff, California.
