Elaine Begley

In Elaine's work memories are revisited, documented and preserved within wax cubes; each a memory box preserving photos, drawings and written memories along with utilising natural materials collected from the site of the memory.

Her innate interest in the environment and the role that it plays in the everyday lives of people led her back to her own memories of nature and this, combined with the abstract and biological nature of Elaine's work, led her to produce her Memory Box series.

Elaine using the making of the cubes to allows her to realise memory by physically representing the different facets of each specific recollection. A process of layering the materials to form strata served to preserve and better present the memories as well as reflecting upon the chronological point of view of which we observe time and geology.

Elaine found that each location she visited had varying characteristics in the form of different organic and natural materials and the presence of specific features; as such, the result is that the colours and content of each cube reflect this and in tern produce a diverse series of sculptures that express the individual facets of the memory.
