Pete Monaghan

Pete trained in technical illustration and spent twenty years working as an illustrator. Over the last ten years he has sought to integrate the strict illustration disciplines with an irrepressible passion for drawing and painting. In 2012 he completed a MA in fine art at Aberystwyth University. Present works call on the depth of his drawing expertise in depicting vernacular architecture, the beauty in the hidden, the modest, the decaying or the unnoticed. Pete sketches on location, often re-sketching many times in the studio in order to interpret and understand. Only then does he feel the freedom to splash and pour paint, enticing abstraction, entering into a dialogue of past visceral response, part representation. Finished works conclude as mixed media pieces incorporating acrylic, ink, crayon and collage.

Pete lives mainly in Southern Germany, close to the Alps but spends considerable time in Wales. He was selected to participate in the 'Discover the Valleys' project in the Autumn of 2012. His work is held in numerous private and public collections throughout the UK and Europe.

Pete had his first sole exhibition at the Kooywood Gallery in 2014 and had a further exhibition of new works in 2015.
