William Brown

William Brown (1953 - 2008) was a Canadian artist who found inspiration in the myths and stories of the Welsh valleys and a fearless, uncompromising maker of paintings, drawings, silkscreen, lino and wood cut prints. His wonderful work is full of metaphor and magical legends, the Venus of Blaengwynfi, allegorical beasts, the Mari Lwyd, the Welsh Valley and of course his iconic bear. There is a sense of theatre, humour and also a great tenderness in the work. Brown exhibited with the Welsh Group of artists and, for a time, with 56 Group Wales. He showed work in major public galleries in both Wales and Canada, as well as in the Czech Republic, France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea and Switzerland.
