Andrew Henderson 1931 - 2017

Andrew Henderson has “always painted”, introduced to it as a child by his father, an electrical engineer who was also a productive water colourist. Self-taught, Andrew painted watercolour landscapes (always on-site), exhibiting in The Royal West of England Academy and with the New English Art Club while a student in the 60s. Other activities and professional priorities at Cambridge, St Thomas’ Hospital and at Harvard, however, increasingly intervened. His subsequent appointment as Professor of Cardiology in Wales coincided with an unprecedented period of growth in its underlying research and specialist clinical practice, leaving little opportunity for painting.
He started to paint more seriously in the 90s when he joined the ‘Experimental Art’ group, led by the inspirational teaching of Robin Child and focussing on the great artists of the 20th century (e.g. Cezanne, Hitchens, Vaughan, Diebenkorn, de Stael, Bomberg). He exhibited in Wales and London, is represented in private collections and is recognised in medical art circles. ‘Eureka’ moments in fundamental science and art he came to recognise as similarly motivated and rewarding, indeed creatively complementary at root.
